How do you people afford this!? :(
I’m just a lowly substitute teacher that’s been driving since I was 21 (2005) and I’ve owned two cars since then....a 2002 Subaru Impreza 2.5TS wagon (my first car) and my current 2009 Hyundai Accent hatch....and I had to scrimp and save just to afford both.
I wish I had the moniez...

Great question! First off I don’t drink or smoke so that’s a lot of extra money in my pocket that others don’t have. Secondly the Touareg through the first Raptor was vehicle allowance from travel in the oil field. Thirdly, make money on the project cars to fund others. Project Thunderbird (2nd) lost money, Wagoneer made money, Spitfire made 30%, 914 made 250% (that was lucky), Wrangler I’m expecting to make 50% or more. The daily’s I lose the depreciation but I usually buy used and either vehicles that keep their value (Raptor/Jeep) or luxury brands that don’t have much further to fall (Touareg/Porsche/BMW). To be fair I make more than a substitute. AND good credit.

Not a bad list. Props for a few nice sports cars, a V10 and a Commodore (and in a nice color too) . And a mid-engine targa top!
Few enough people can say they’ve owned a V10, excepting the common Hurragallardo R8 one.

My personal color is Green, as demonstrated by the selection of New SS and shipped in Cayenne. Sadly there are few green choices in the used car world of interesting vehicles I would like to own.

I agree: green is good. Sadly, even with green tending to end up on a lot of interesting cars, it is hard to find one in an interesting color. Sometimes you have to settle for red, which I don’t think has any business being the most common non grayscale paint.

Self Diagnosed Automotive ADD? I can’t really explain why but we got a second foster child that has some behavior problems and didn’t trust her to not mess up something on it while in it . Or even not to run a toy down the side of it while walking through the garage to get in my wife’s MINI. So we took the MINI everywhere. The cayenne is too expensive of a car to let sit in the garage only to drive a couple hundred miles a month. I also like to modify and everything was just a little too much to justify the mod.

I was considering that exact Cayenne GTS when you posted that you bought it on here. I was also strongly considering an i3 as a daily driver a few months ago, but still have range anxiety, so I decided to take advantage of a lease deal on a leftover dealer loaner 330i. I have had 12 cars in 16 years, I need to catch up.

I haven’t owned too many cars in my 13 years driving but can confirm, am stupid. A bought-new WRX and 10 year old BMW is probably the most sensible I can be. Right now I want to build a motorcycle powered car/cart/buggy and the temptation to decimate my house/property/investment fund for an M2 comp, GT350 or a Raptor is strong at all times.

Good question, the eventual sports car is a 911 but our youngest still cant buckle herself in a carseat so I’m thinking that needs to come first. I have a couple Autotrader alerts setup for Macan Turbo, X4 M40i, X6 M, 500 Abarth, Supercharged MINI Cooper, and 911. I originally got the Wrangler to keep as a reliable and get another toy for the garage but I feel its a little too compromised for extended highway driving with a soft top and toddlers.

Oh man, I’ve got questions for you then...
My buddy is trying to talk his wife into a 17 GX460, she is coming from a 2007 Acura MDX. Any thoughts I could pass onto him? Should he or shouldn’t he?
911 is on my short list, would you say the 997 is worth the premium to keep saving over the 996 or does the 996 get you 90% of the way there if there is no track purpose. I’ve driven 996 cab, 997 turbo, 991 S but unless it was my daily, the 991 felt too big/heavy.
Lastly I keep an eye out for a r53 just because they seem like a lot of fun for not a lot of money to modify. I seem to be draw to the supercharger whine but should I just skip it since I bet it will just be another interesting car I go through or are they truly something special. I also go back and forth between it and a 500 Abarth.
Very unique list you have yourself.

Don’t wait too long for the 911! I think I’ve missed my window (kids are too big now, so I’ll need to wait until they’re driving themselves).
I’ve had my M3 for 8 years now, and I picked up my Tacoma a couple years back. Not sure if I’ll make any changes (unless I have to) in the next couple years - waiting for my oldest to get old enough to help shuttle his siblings.
GT350, M2 or GTI will probably be the answer if I need to replace my M3 before I can start looking at 2-seaters. I am very interested in the upcoming GR Corolla hatch - hope it’s great. Also hoping the Bronco is great (and reliable)
- possible Tacoma replacement down the line.

She turns 3 in August so I think I have time. If the Bronco is everything it is suppose to be, I may wait for the dealer markups to die down and maybe pick one up with the 7-speed(!) and add a 996 turbo or 997 S once the bank account recovers from that swap. I had the Ridgeline for 6 years and technically owned the first Thunderbird for 10 years but only 3-4 (high school and college) years of that was my only/primary car.

Doubt if I’ll buy a Bronco new, but we’ll see. If my son ends up buying my Tacoma at some point, seems like it could be a good option. Maybe they’ll put a V8 in it by then. =) My first Porsche will be a manual with a flat 6 - could see it being a Cayman S instead of a 911.
I’ve been driving for 26 years, and have owned a grand total of... 7 cars.
‘86 Toyota Camry
‘88 Acura Legend
‘91 Honda Accord
(back into the Legend)
‘05 Mazda 3s hatch
‘08 M3 sedan
‘03 Pathfinder (beater)
‘18 Tacoma Off-Road
All manual except the Pathfinder.

Im 22 and have owned 16 cars, its not so much that I afford it as, its literally where every penny has gone that isnt bills. Eating cheap, cheap phone up until recently, go out less then once a month, spend all your time keeping the cheap ones running. The money would be better spent on a savings account

The GX is a perfectly fine vehicle. Mine was a daily driver lease. I probably would have kept it, but the buyout was more expensive than what it’s worth, so I just turned it back in. Mine was dead reliable as expected. They’re dated tech wise with outdated and slow infotainment and almost no safety tech. The barn door in the back takes some getting used to , I prefer the the hatch and tailgate on the Land Cruisers and LXes. There’s a third row, but with it up, there’s almost no cargo space behind it. I think I only had the third row up twice in the 3 years I had it. But I would recommend one.
I moved from the 996 to the 997 because I felt the 996 was dated inside and I was getting IMS fears with the low miles I had (supposedly less failures on cars that get driven) . Instead of spending the couple thousand to do the IMS, I just decided to upgrade to a high spec 997. However, I now think the 996 is starting to look a little retro and I’ve seen some high mile, well worn 996es and the thought to pick one up as a winter beater has crossed my mind . The 991 does feel like more like a GT car compared to the 996 and 997. I moved to the 991 because I was done with having a cabriolet and planned on doing more daily driving with it. I also test drove a 997 Turbo, but preferred the N/A power. I think the 997 is a more special car compared to the 996, but I think it comes down to the spec too. A base non-S 997 vs a 996, I don’t think it’d be worth the premium.
With the R53, I find myself trolling Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace occasionally to find another 2005 or 2006. The R53 was special for me because the MINI relaunch in 2002 is when I started getting obsessed with cars. The supercharger whine is good and they are great fun and are surprisingly spacious. However, it might be just another car you go through, but that’ s how I feel about most modern cars, I think vintage stuff is what scratches my itch now . But I do think its a lot of car for the money and there’s lots of go fast parts available .

Funny how much more I like the SS with the Holden grille on it.
I just had brain dysfunction and bought a PPV for grins.... and mentally am trying to shoehorn G8 or Holden fascia on it. I actually really like the fender flares on the stock PPV... but hate the grille and hate the ass end.

That’s not a bad way to be. My best pal at work had up until just recently, his first car. I’m 35 hes 33. It was an 03 accord he and his brother were allowed to use until after college when they gave it to my buddy. He and I have worked together for 6 years and I have helped him nurse that car all the way to just under 300k. I honestly think I was more bummed than he was when he finally decided to junk it. They never even put it in his name so in actuality he has owned 0 cars!
On the other side of the spectrum... I could have bought his accord brand new for what I have spent on maintaining my E46M3 over the past 13.5 years. That is just 1/15 cars that I have owned.
Ironically, I bought that car when I was nearly broke actually broke. I traded in my 04 STi on a slightly used M3 when I was 8k underwater on the loan for the STi. I rolled that into the loan for the M3 and paid $8xx/month from the ripe old age of 22 until I was 27, hah. I worked days at circuit city and nights for a valet company. My rent was cheap and I had 0 other responsibilities. I w as laid off from Circuit City when they closed their doors in 09 and there were times when I didn’t think I would be able to make it. The time I came the closest to not making the payment, I had called the officer in charge of my loan and asked for a 5 day extension. During that 5 days I went to any local office building that would let me in and offered ANY IT work for whatever they were willing to pay. Fixed an old coffee maker for the last $10 to make that payment which I did in person...with cash lol by the skin of my butt.
One guy thought I was homeless or abused or something, and offered me a loony tunes amount of money. I had to be like, “T his is the nicest thing a stranger has ever offered but I’m just a moron with an expensive car. Save that nice gesture for someone that really needs it.”

My wife very rarely has much input on my vehicles but with the SS she said the Chevy badges were too redneck and was all for the change when I told her it something I was looking it to. It completely changed the vehicle from “Maybe an Impala” to “that thing looks like something special, What is it?”

The STi was a gem, but I only had it 6 months before I hit a deer. The insurance shop did such a bad job with the repair that I had to fight with them to do it over. I traded it in before it was finished, selling dealer picked it up for me, never saw it again.
My E46 has also been a gem . Any S54 owner will tell you to set aside about 2k annually for tires and maintenance. I’m slightly over that average because I have replaced every plastic/rubber bit that showed so much as a blemish (and those plastic/rubber bits are SILLY expensive).
I had an E90 M3 that was “spit in your face expensive” pitched it after the warranty was up.

Well that is good priorities, I’ve owned 3 houses so far and have made way more off of those than my cars combined so its a great investment if the market is right. Yeah, that’s why I am leery of more complicated cars, haha! My Accent was all of $6900 CAD all-in, tax and everything included when I got it with 54,000kms on it :P
Excluding the necessary ‘because-I-live-in-Nova-Scotia, Canada’ rust repairs, it’s maybe a few hundred a year in maintenance....? Dead reliable.
Sucks about the insurance work on your STi...shitty worksmanship is why I had to get the rust re-fixed on the Accent this year, because the guy that did it last year did a bad enough job that the one spot he did rusted out again TWO AND A HALF MONTHS later (this was over the summer, even! [and a VERY dry summer, for around here,
at that!]
) and the other spot rusted out something like 7 or 9 months later....not even a year...
